For adults with high uric acid levels or chronic gout symptoms that haven't responded to standard treatment — explore a study-related option under the care of an experienced research team.
Gout attacks can be sudden, painful, and disruptive — and for some, standard medications simply aren't enough to bring uric acid levels under control. Advanced Rheumatology of Houston is currently enrolling participants in a clinical research study for adults with persistent or treatmet-resistant gout.
Participation may give you access to investigational treatment, close monitoring by a dedicated research team, and the chance to help advance gout care for patients like you in the future.
WHO MAY QUALIFY
You may qualify if you:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have been diagnosed with gout
- Continue to have high uric acid levels despite treatment, or cannot take standard uric acid-lowering medications
- Have frequent gout attacks, gout tophi (lumps/crystals), or chronic gout symptoms
- Are willing to stop your current oral gout medication during the study, if medically appropriate
WHO MAY NOT QUALIFY
This study has specific medical criteria. You may not qualify if you:
- Have severe kidney disease or are on dialysis
- Have G6PD deficiency
- Have hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV
- Have significant liver disease
- Have uncontrolled diabetes or uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Have certain serious heart conditions or a recent heart attack
- Have had cancer within the past 5 years (excluding certain skin cancers)
- Have had an organ transplant requiring immune-suppressing medications
- Have previously received pegloticase (Krystexxa®)
- Cannot take methotrexate
- Have an allergy to PEG (polyethylene glycol) or similar medications
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy
- Are currently participating in another clinical trial
WHAT TO EXPECT
- A brief phone screening, followed by laboratory testing, to determine final eligibility
- Clear communication about study requirements every step of the way
- Note: participants must be willing to pause their current oral gout medication if medically appropriate, and to use effective birth control during the study if applicable
