What is Lupus?

Systemic lupus erythematosus, commonly referred to as lupus or SLE, is a chronic disease that can affect many body systems. Lupus can cause inflammation and organ damage throughout the entire body, including the brain, eyes, skin, joints, lungs, heart, GI tract, kidneys, bone marrow, blood counts, and blood vessels. Lupus varies in how it affects people. Flares are common, can vary in seriousness, and the disease can progress rapidly when active.

Diagnosing and Treating Lupus

Lupus is difficult to diagnose because each patient presentation can be different, the blood work is not always positive, and/or the clinical symptoms are sometimes subtle. The best way of diagnosing this disease is through blood tests and a thorough history and physical exam by a Rheumatologist. She has a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences from Texas A&M University and completed her Doctor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Additionally, she completed her Fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of Texas-Health Science Center. She is board certified in rheumatology and has been in private practice since 2009.
