AbbVie Research Study

Advanced Rheumatology of Houston understands that not every patient will respond to current treatment options. There are patients who have struggled with Rheumatoid Arthritis for years, and who have tried all the treatments available to the public without relief. Everyone deserves to live a full, healthy life and RA can prevent that sometimes. That’s why Advanced Rheumatology of Houston is participating in the AbbVie research study, a trial run of a combination drug that could potentially improve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

This is a disorder that affects the membranes lining one’s joints. Inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and chronic pain are all symptoms. It is the most common autoimmune disorder, affecting over 1.3 million Americans. Prolonged, untreated rheumatoid arthritis can cause deterioration in one’s bones and joints. It can also affect the heart, lungs, eyes, and other organs.

Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Patients suffering from RA may experience stiff joints, swollen joints, or mild to severe joint pain typically more prominent in the morning. These can lead to decreased mobility in patients. Lower energy and fatigue is also common. Some patients may suffer from fevers, appetite loss, dry eyes and mouth, and in some cases, lumps around the elbows and hands. In more severe cases, patients may exhibit signs of chest pain, shortness of breath, and rashes.

Treatments Available to the Public

The earlier you begin treatment for RA, the better, as this slows the progression of the illness. There are many different medications available to patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The most common treatment is the use of DMARDs (disease modifying antirheumatic drugs). These suppress the body’s immune system, improving inflammation over time. Physical therapy may also be used in conjunction with DMARDs.
