Global Research on Lupus

Potential Symptoms of Lupus

Lupus, also known by its formal name Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, is a complex and sometimes life-threatening autoimmune disease. There is currently no cure, however, researchers across the globe are looking into ways we can improve pain management for individuals suffering from any of the symptoms of lupus. This disease can cause a wide variety of symptoms ranging from uncomfortable inflammation of one’s joints to fatigue or even the damage of vital organs such as one’s kidneys or lungs.

Your local Spring TX Rheumatologist, Dr. Brionez, is participating in this global research at our Spring Advanced Rheumatology of Houston clinic. For further information regarding this study and your possible eligibility, see the SLE-BRAVE research study.

Global Research On Arthritis

If your joints are swollen, tender, and cause you pain to move and bend, you may be suffering from the common rheumatologic condition known as arthritis. You need the expertise Dr. Brionez can offer you from diagnosing and treating arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles, bones, and tendons for over a decade.

Arthritis can cause intense joint pain in one’s hands.

Like lupus, arthritis is a kind of autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and pain in one’s joints. There are many kinds of arthritis, most of which target and destroy the soft and flexible tissue in your joints known as cartilage. When this tissue breaks down, your joints become swollen, stiff, tender, and painful. These symptoms make daily tasks, even something as simple as typing, increasingly difficult and incredibly painful.

Gout acts very differently, and osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the US. However, only a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis will make you eligible to participate in our two global research studies on arthritis.

If diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis may be eligible for participation in the contRAst study, which aims to slow the progression of the disease using a promising new medication.

Alternatively, if diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, you may be eligible to participate in the KEEPsAKE study. If you have tried several medications for pain management, none of which have worked for you, this study is for you. It aims to test the effectiveness of a new medication that may help improve swelling and pain in one’s joints where existing medications have failed.

Other Conditions We Treat Involving Joint Pain

As previously mentioned, gout is a form of arthritis that acts very differently than most other forms. Instead of breaking down the cartilage in your joints, gout causes the formation of tiny needle-like urate crystals. Following their creation, your white blood cells find and attack these crystals. This often causes the person immense pain. Gout most commonly develops in feet and most often begins with a person’s big toe. Have you noticed continuous pain in your feet? Call our Spring TX clinic today for information regarding gout screening.

If you experience the sudden onset or continual discomfort of stiffness, swelling, tenderness, and pain in your arms, back, neck, or legs, you may have developed a rheumatologic condition known as Polymyalgia Rheumatica. This inflammatory condition requires a treatment plan involving medication and regular bloodwork. Call Dr. Brionez today to see how she can help you live pain-free again.

Dr. Brionez can also diagnose and treat a very serious and sometimes life-threatening rheumatologic condition known as scleroderma. Scleroderma has two main subsets – localized scleroderma and systemic scleroderma. Localized scleroderma mainly targets a person’s skin, but if left untreated, it has the potential to attack your joints and muscles as well. Systemic scleroderma, however, targets a person’s organs.

Other Conditions We Treat Not Involving Joint Pain

Like scleroderma, myositis is also divided into two main subsets. These subsets are polymyositis and dermatomyositis. Polymyositis causes unexplained muscle weakness. Dermatomyositis causes similar muscle weakness as well as uncomfortable rashes. If a diagnosis within either of these subsets is determined, Dr. Brionez will work with you on an individualized treatment plan involving physical therapy and medication.

Moving away from rheumatologic conditions involving the skin, have you recently broken a bone? Did the following x-ray reveal a possible loss of bone density? If so, call Dr. Brionez and ask about our simple and painless bone mineral density test used to screen for osteoporosis. Later, if such a diagnosis is confirmed, Dr. Brionez will help you navigate your supplement options and other potential treatments you may require. Your treatment plan will depend on the amount of loss discovered.

Moving away from joint and bone health all-together, one of the most unique rheumatologic conditions we treat at Advanced Rheumatology of Houston goes by the name Sjogren’s Syndrome. Unlike the previously discussed rheumatologic conditions, this disease does not target your joints, bones, or even muscles. Instead, it attacks your saliva glands and tear ducts. Sjogren’s Syndrome often increases a person’s risk for dental decay. If this diagnosis is reached, Dr. Brionez will help you work towards an effective treatment plan as unique as the condition itself.
